JULY / AUGUST 2008

Churches Together in Penmaenmawr
Committee Meeting holden on Thursday, 1st May 2008, at Eglwys y Berth
Minutes

Attendance
Enid Williams, Frank and Elizabeth Smith, Brian Wright, Hywel Evans, David Dredge, Stella Starr.

Apologies
Robert Pope, Robert Searle, Elsie Merrick, Michael Outram.

1   Opening Prayer
The meeting commenced with a time of prayer.   Brian read from Acts 2 and commented that as Jesus was dependent on the Holy Spirit, so the Church needs Him to lead and fulfil the ministry, keep us on track so that we can do the works already prepared for us.   Stella spoke from Ps. 92:12 onwards of how the palm tree can survive being cut because the goodness of the tree is in the centre and we have this treasure in earthen vessels.   The roots go down deeply so that it is able to find moisture in time of drought, and that it bends, sometimes to the ground, in time of storm.   However, once the storm is over it returns as straight and even stronger than before.

2   Minutes & Matters arising
The minutes were checked and agreed.

3   Open-air meeting on beach
The date of July 27th at 3.00 pm was agreed upon.   Oasis to approach worship team to provide music.   Speaker to be arranged at the next meeting.   Enid has seen the Beach Café owner who has given permission for us to use the area outside the Café and for us to use his electricity for an amplifier.

4   Christian Aid update
QuizAid will be held at Noddfa on May 8th at 2.00 pm for 2.15 pm.   Would ministers please make sure that people are made aware.
Tables for the fair are yet to be arranged;   Enid is dealing with this.

5   Strawberry Tea update
Bob is having bother with his computer;   in the event that he cannot produce posters, etc. he will contact Gwynfor Evans on 623405.   Hywel was advised that we do not need quite so much cream this year.   It was suggested that next year we could do a cream tea with scones, cream and strawberries.

6   Open Doors Coffee Morning
Hazel apologized for the fact that she is unable to arrange the Open Doors coffee morning because of other commitments.   It was agreed that a donation of £100 should be sent to support them.

7   A O B
Michael has asked that The Songs of Praise service should be held at Dewi Sant on Sun Oct 19th 2008.   It was thought that the time of 4.00 pm would be convenient.

8   Date and location of next meeting
The next meeting will be held at Eglwys y Berth on July 10th at 2.00 pm.   Hywel will bring the thought.   The meeting ended with us saying the blessing one to another.

Minutes of Committee Meeting at St David’s Methodist Church, Craig-y-Don, Llandudno on 22nd April 2008 at 7.30pm.

Present:

Rev Keith Forecast (President), Meurig Edwards (Swyddog Iaith), Pauline Hogan (Colwyn Bay & Rhos Cytûn), Gareth Morris (Treasurer), Dyfed Matthews (Old Colwyn Churches Together), Rev John Nice (Llandudno & District Cytûn) and David Smith (Secretary / Minutes).

1.   Worship & Prayer

KF opened the meeting with prayer.

2.   Welcome / Apologies

KF welcomed everyone to the meeting, especially PH who was attending for the first time.   Apologies were received from Rev Pam Wright, Rev Nick Sissons, Hilda Jones and Arline Griffiths.

3.   Minutes of Committee meeting on 7th February 2008

These were accepted as a true and accurate record.

4.   Matters Arising not on the agenda

a) Item 5 — Building Communities.   KF reported that this should actually read “Connecting Communities” and is the police initiative.   He has still not heard anything more about this.
b) Item 8 — Walks of Witness (WOW).   Llandudno / Old Colwyn WOW went ahead.   DS reported that he did chase the council regarding response to letters sent by KF and JN.   However, neither had received a reply.   Numbers were healthy — around 100 in Old Colwyn and around 200 in Llandudno.
c) Item 10 — Partnerships.   DS reported that the Prosperity Partnership is folding and that the Rural Partnership is hoping to pick up on relevant issues.   DM enquired about the CD-ROM on Mental Health issues that had previously been mentioned by PW and whether this was still available. More information from PW.
d) Item 12 — Fairtrade Coalition.   KF reported that this would be meeting this week, and he would report back if/when he received further information.

5.   Financial Statement

GM reported that due to a difference in the amount of grants received over what had been promised, plus extra expenditure that had been unforeseen during 2007/8, we are expecting a shortfall of £106.68.   If we had not been commissioning publicity material we would have been carrying forward a balance of £118.42.   Various suggestions were made as to how the shortfall could be covered, including GM approaching Conwy CBC regarding the Welsh Church Acts fund, a general appeal for donations (which would need to be explained), plus a choral event.   It was decided that the important thing to consider at this stage is a commitment to raise the extra money required.   JN offered Trinity Parish Church in Llandudno for the potential choral event.   It was decided to put the suggestion to the next Open Forum meeting.

6.   Display Boards / Website

DS reported on the on-going problems regarding the email / web addresses requested via Cytûn Wales that would need to be put on to the banners being produced.   It was eventually agreed that we go with www.cytun-conwycountyborough.org.uk as the English web address and www.cytun-sirconwy.org.uk for the Welsh address.   English email address will be info@cytun-conwycountyborough.org.uk and the Welsh email address will be gwybodaeth@cytun-sirconwy.org.uk.   DS and GM to do final liaison and then DS to give the required information to the publicity company.

It was agreed that we now need to consider what information goes on to the website and the management of the email addresses.   It was agreed that help would be required with this.   JN agreed to approach Noel Walley who does the Llandudno & District Cytûn website to see if he would be willing to help.

7.   Urdd Eisteddfod — local participation

ME reported that a meeting of the planning group had taken place on 28/02/2008.   A letter had been circulated to all Welsh Language Sunday Schools in Conwy and a letter to English Language churches was circulated via email.   Two more meetings had taken place on 10/04/2008 — one at lunchtime and another in the evening.   A second letter is being circulated to Welsh Language Sunday Schools tomorrow.   Programme to include activities for young children at the beginning of the week and for under 25s at the end of the week.   There will also be a non-alcoholic cocktail bar that will be staffed by young people themselves.   Also display board area for Sunday Schools to advertise themselves.   ME highlighted that this is the first time that Cytûn has been involved in the Urdd.   KF said that he understood that diocesan funds of around £200 are still available (liaison required with Pam Wright).   ME stated that Units on the Maes are available at £600 each and a double Unit will be required (joint Sunday Schools Council / Cytûn).   Cytûn Wales have already managed to raise £500 towards it.   It was agreed that if the Cytûn CCB banners are ready by then that they should be used.   KF thanked ME for his work on this to date.

8.   Relations with the Muslims — future encounters

A return visit to the Mosque in Llandudno Junction planned for earlier this month had not gone ahead for a number of reasons.   Another date is now required.   Rev Nick Sissons is also arranging a study evening to look at the Muslim / Christian scriptures together.   The concept of “love” has been suggested for this event, to look at how the Christians and Muslims view it.   This will take place on 5th June in the evening.   Agreed that we need to be careful that there aren’t too many Christians at this, therefore an open invitation will be issued but registration of attendance will be required through NS.   NS to compose the email and DS to circulate it.   The next visit to the Mosque will also be in June.   KF to liaise regarding the actual date so that he can attend.

The concept of a Christian Awareness Week was also raised and it was agreed that this should be put on to the agenda of a future meeting.

9.   The future of Cytûn Conwy County Borough

KF spoke about the background to this.   There is some concern about the future viability of Cytûn.   KF has always stated that he will be President for two years and this time is now up.   DS has to stand down as Secretary due to family / work reasons.   PW has also indicated that she wishes to stand down as Vice President.   There are also a number of vacancies on the Committee to represent local Cytûns.   A general discussion followed, during which KF said that he would be willing to continue as President for a further 12months if a Secretary could be found.   It was agreed to put it to the next Open Forum. Various people were suggested for approach, including John Waddington (NS to approach), Brian Sherrington (KF to approach), Rev David Jenkins (JN to approach), Hilda Jones, Chris Alcraft (DS to approach), Rev Fred Halstead, Rev Keith Jones and Rev Jane Allen.   It was agreed that if any of these people were not already aware of the Open Forum that they should be invited.

10.   Open Forum Meeting — 30th April 2008

This will be held at St John’s Uniting Church in Colwyn Bay at 7.30pm.   Two speakers have been booked — Family Mediation North Wales and Circles of Support & Accountability.   Speakers for the Partnerships — KF to ask Neil McKenzie and Pam Wright.   Also agreed that there would be a brief financial statement regarding the predicted shortfall in the budget, followed by ideas for balancing the books.

11.   Any other Business

There was no other business.

12.   Date for next Committee Meeting

This will be on Tuesday 10th June 2008 at 7.30pm at St David’s Methodist Church, Craig-y-Don.

Present:   Bob and Nen Valintine; David Clarke, Trevor Williams, Pam Kirkham, Nia Higginbotham, Gene Miller-Grime, Anna Jane.

Apologies:   Hywel Evans, Lis Perkins, Gwen + Gavin Roscoe, Louise Edwards

Matters Arising
Meeting with NFU — Nia and Anna Jane will be meeting with the NFU in Llanrwst on Thursday (report back in the next meeting).
Signatories for cheques.   David reported that we need to change the signatories because of the change in officers.   Felicity is not allowed to take the responsibility because of her role within the council – it was passed that Nia and Pam would be the new names replacing Lis and Anna Jane.
Report of the Towns work — Louise was unable to attend — Anna Jane reported that she and Louise had spoken to the Llanrwst Town Council and we’re still awaiting their response.   David said we still owe Louise the second payment of the contract which we will pay on receipt of her report.

FT Fortnight:   The Cathedral service in Bangor was cancelled but a dinner was arranged for people to meet Patrick.
Schools Conferences went very well — thanks to all who came to help in Glasdir.   The children were very engaged, Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy pupils led a workshop.   We will get a full list of the schools who participated (30 had registered).   The coalition thanked the group who had organised the days.   Recipe cards were given to all the children and schools who attended.
Dreams of an African Child — the drama night in Llandudno went very well with about 70 people there.   It was very powerful and moving and there might well be an opportunity to work with Robin Graham, the writer and producer again in the future.
Fashion Show, Llanrwst — went ok.
Film Show St David’s had FT refreshments (another to be held on April 8th).
Co-op Breakfast — went ok.
Co-op presentation very well attended — but it was noted that there was no media coverage for the Co-op events — a sign of how difficult it is to get the media to promote things by now.
Display about FT and a 5 minute talk about it in St David’s on the first Sunday of the fortnight — and the second Sunday had a full FT service using a Traidcraft video.
Gloddaeth United Church also had a sketch about FT in one of their FT14 services.

Update on FT towns.
Colwyn Bay not there yet — it was agreed that we should invite interested people to a meeting on May 7th in Princes Drive.   7.30p.m. to get the ball rolling properly.
Betws y Coed, Llanrwst and Abergele will be in Louise’s report (next meeting).
We need to ask the Co-op for reps in the town groups and in the County group (AJ to ask Duncan)
Conwy and Llandudno are very close to submitting their application forms.
Nia had visited Bodafon Fields and reported it would be a good venue for a future event in Llandudno.   They are looking into the possibilities of serving FT products (needs to be followed up).
New coffee shop: Sure Hope in the InterChange, Old Colwyn.

Future plans
June 11th — AGM and Fashion Show in Old Colwyn.   AGM at 6p.m. and reports to be tabled and presented as part of the Fashion Show (venue tbc).
Caterfair — Kingdom Krafts have got a stall in this — Venue Cymru April 8 – 10.   Needs volunteers.   We will have recipe cards on the stall.
